Take Action

Current Actions

  • Tell Congress: Stand With America's Steel & Aluminum Workers

After a nearly 11-month investigation, President Trump on March 8 officially took action to defend American workers against surging foreign steel and aluminum imports.

While some Members of Congress from both parties agreed the time to act is now, others would rather stand with Wall Street — and trade cheats like China — than help people on Main Street.

Tell your Members of Congress that enough is enough! It's time for them to stand with American workers.

  • Tell Your Senators: Stand with the Working Class, Not China

After years of surrendering to countries like China on trade, the United States is finally standing up for itself.

But after years of doing nothing to balance trade and stand up for American workers, establishment Republicans suddenly care about trade enforcement — and sadly are making legislative moves to stop it.

If this effort succeeds, the president will be stripped of his ability to take immediate trade action in response to national security threats. America will be unable to respond quickly to threats, if at all. Countries like China will be let off the hook.

Meanwhile, thousands of factory workers in places like Granite City, Ill., will find themselves out of a job, and once again without hope.

Tell your Senators to oppose this disastrous legislation.

  • Tell Your Senators: No More American Trade Surrender!

  • TELL TRUMP: U.S. Workers Deserve Better. Stand Up to China!

Trump administration officials recently wrapped up talks with Chinese officials in Washington. Things did not go well.

No commitments were made to finally stop China’s theft of intellectual property, which costs the U.S. economy up to $600 billion a year. Nothing was done to address China’s unfair trade practices that have lead to lost American jobs (3.4 million between 2001 and 2015).

Instead, officials agreed to suspend tariffs on Chinese products — and played right into Beijing’s hands.

Beijing’s unfair trade practices — theft of trade secrets, state-led capitalism, piracy, mercantilism, forced technology transfer, industrial overcapacity — have long gone unchecked. Nothing will change unless the United States gets tough.

Tell President Trump to stand up to China.

  • Tell Trump: Do Not Concede to China! Uphold Ban on ZTE

ZTE is a shady telecommunications company with direct ties to the Chinese government. It is considered a major threat to American security, and has broken trade embargoes with Iran and North Korea. The Commerce Department recently banned U.S. companies from providing exports to ZTE for seven years in response.

On May 13, President Trump tweeted that he is working with Chinese President Xi Jinping to help ZTE get back into business. This would be a huge mistake.

Tell Trump to stand up against China and uphold the ZTE ban.

  • Trump’s Infrastructure Plan Abandons Blue-Collar Workers

President Trump talks a big game about helping American workers. So why did he put forth an infrastructure investment plan that doesn’t include Buy America?

American companies stand ready to rebuild America’ infrastructure, and at a fair price. Investing in them will create millions of jobs and provide an economic boost to local communities.

But without Buy America language, infrastructure work could be sent overseas, to be done in government-owned factories in places like China and Russia.

Trump abandoned America’s working class in his infrastructure plan. Now it’s up to you to stand alongside them.

  • Tell Congress: Stand With America's Steel & Aluminum Workers

After a nearly 11-month investigation, President Trump on March 8 officially took action to defend American workers against surging foreign steel and aluminum imports.

While some Members of Congress from both parties agreed that the time to act is now, others would rather stand with Wall Street — and trade cheats like China — than help people on Main Street.

Tell your Members of Congress that enough is enough! It's time for them to stand with American workers.

  • Tell Trump: Act Now to Defend American Steel and Aluminum

President Trump promised to stand up for America's working class. Now he needs to keep that promise.

Commerce Department investigations found that steel and aluminum imports are a threat to America's defense. In response, President Trump promised on March 1 that he would issue tariffs to protect factory jobs and defend our national security, but his decision is not yet final.

Tell the president to take swift, comprehensive action to stand up for American steel and aluminum.

  • Tell President Trump: Take Bold Action Now to Protect Our National Security and American Jobs

Years of unfair trade have greatly weakened America's domestic steelmaking capabilities. Tell President Trump to act swiftly on the Section 232 investigation to defend our national security and American jobs.

Take action by filling out the form to the right, which can be personalized with your own message for the president.

  • TAKE ACTION: Tell President Trump to Finally Deliver on Trade

President Trump rode into office promising big things for America's factory workers. Sadly, he has yet to deliver — and many of America's trade problems are getting worse.

Now Trump is heading to Asia for a big diplomatic trip. It's a make-or-break moment that will prove whether Trump really will stand up to China and keep his promises to rebalance trade.

  • Tell President Trump: Steel’s Our Strength. Act NOW!

President Trump pledged to stand up for America’s working class — and it’s time for him to make good on his word.

The Trump administration promised to act by July 1 to defend American steel and aluminum, which are critical for our national security and infrastructure. That deadline is long past — and still no action.

All the while, a surge of unfairly traded imports continues to flood our shores, threatening to put American manufacturers out of business. If that happens, we’d have to rely on China and Russia for our steel and aluminum. Can you even imagine how risky that would be?

This isn’t a partisan issue. It’s about safeguarding national security and American jobs.

Tell President Trump to stand up for American steel and aluminum.

  • It's Time to Stand Up for American Steel and Aluminum

A flood of unfairly traded imports from places like China and Russia are putting American steel and aluminum at risk and jeopardizing our national security. If we don’t act now, we will soon be dependent on China and Russia for the steel and aluminum we need to defend our country.

President Trump is investigating these imports and has promised to defend America’s industrial base. But the D.C. swamp is doing everything in its power to stall the investigation and stop the president from taking action for America’s working class.

Steel and aluminum workers can’t wait much longer. Tell President Trump to act now.

  • Tell Congress: Stop This Offshoring Loophole!

Congress is about to pass legislation that could open the floodgates and allow our water infrastructure to be built by China and Russia — and time is running out to stop it.

House appropriators are set to vote on funding for water infrastructure projects, and a massive loophole buried in the bill would weaken Buy America preferences. Right now, water projects built with taxpayer dollars must use American-made iron and steel, but the loophole would severely weaken the Buy America standard.

Tell your Member of Congress to support an amendment to plug the loophole — and support American iron and steelworkers!

  • Tell President Trump & Congress: Stand Up to Russia & China!

Steel and aluminum imports from countries like Russia and China put our national security at risk.

These imports — which are subsidized and often government-owned — are being dumped into the U.S. market at rock-bottom prices. American companies operate in an open market place. They can't compete against the Russian or Chinese government.

We need steel and aluminum to build everything from tanks, fighter jets and aircraft carriers to electrical systems and bridges. But if we don't step up now, America's entire aluminum and steel industries could disappear — and we'll have to rely on Russia and China for our national defense needs. Can you even imagine?

Tell President Trump and Congress to safeguard America's national defense.

  • America's Energy Independence Starts with American Steel

As America looks to secure its energy independence, American workers and companies stand at the ready. American steel and iron manufacturers are the most efficient and productive in the world, and if given the opportunity to provide the iron and steel needed for our energy infrastructure, they will rise to the occasion.

Tell your Members of Congress and the Trump administration to apply Buy America preferences to all energy infrastructure.

  • Add Your Name! Stand Up for America's Working Class

China's unchecked trade cheating left the working class devastated. For years, the D.C. elite did nothing about it.

President Trump has taken executive action to stand up for America's factory workers — but the fight isn't over yet.

  • Tell President Trump: Now's the Time to Get Tough on China

President Trump talked a big game on China on the campaign trail.

When Trump meets with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Florida this week, it is an opportunity for the president to make good on his campaign promises.

  • Tell N.Y. State Legislators: Pass Buy American and Create Jobs

Bipartisan legislation being considered right now by the New York State Assembly would strengthen the Empire State's Buy American preferences. This would create good-paying American jobs and reinvest state tax dollars into our economy.

Tell your state representatives to pass Buy American.

  • The WTO Shouldn't Undermine America's Trade Laws

The World Trade Organization (WTO) has disproportionally targeted America's trade enforcement laws. Although the U.S. is just one of the WTO's 164 members, it has been targeted in nearly 58 percent of trade remedy cases — and of those cases, the WTO has ruled against the U.S. about 90 percent of the time.

It's time for America to take a stand to ensure our trade laws stay strong.

  • Tell Congress: Back Buy America and Create American Jobs

Buy America simply makes sense. It creates jobs, encourages economic growth and protects our national security.

Tell your Members of Congress and the Trump administration to support Buy America.

  • It’s Time to Rebuild America. Let’s Make Sure We Do It Right.

Photos courtesy New York State Thruway Authority

Here’s something President-elect Donald Trump, many lawmakers and big, bipartisan majorities of voters agree upon: It’s time to rebuild America.

Investing in our roads, bridges, tunnels, railways, ports, airports, water systems, pipelines, electrical grid and more could create millions of jobs, boost our economy and make America more competitive on the global stage. And we’ll create even more jobs and boost our economy even further if we also make sure we keep this work Made in America, rather than offshoring it to countries like China.

Tell the incoming presidential administration and Congress to invest in our infrastructure AND enact commonsense Buy America provisions.

Tell the incoming presidential administration and Congress to invest in our infrastructure AND enact commonsense Buy America provisions.

  • Tell Congress: Back Buy America and Create American Jobs

Buy America preferences give American workers and companies the first shot at federal projects like building a new bridge or manufacturing supplies for our military. It just makes sense. Buy America creates jobs, boosts the economy and even strengthens our national security.

But over time, outsourcers have succeeded in riddling Buy America with loopholes and waivers. That's meant more of our tax dollars have been sent overseas to countries like China.

Enough is enough. Tell Congress to stand up for American workers and companies and support Buy America.

  • Tell Congress: Stop China's Buying Spree of U.S. Companies

Why in the world would our government allow a Chinese firm likely connected to its government take over the Chicago Stock Exchange?

China’s Chongqing Casin Enterprise Group just received approval from the U.S. government to purchase the Chicago Stock Exchange, raising a number of troubling questions about the security of sensitive data companies must provide to the stock exchange in order be listed.

The U.S. has one of the most open markets in the world for investment. Certain acquisitions by foreign-owned companies can spur growth and create jobs here in the United States. However, when potentially hostile foreign governments are behind the decision-making, we need to draw a line. We must give these deals extra scrutiny to ensure that our national security will not be jeopardized.

Tell Congress to stop China’s buying spree of U.S. companies. Our national security is at risk.
  • Tell Congress to Pass the Water Resources Development Act

Photo by Eric Norris via Flickr

Water is vital to our health and well being. But right now, America’s water systems are in bad shape, and we’ve seen the consequences in places like Flint.

Congress has the opportunity to improve things by passing a key piece of legislation to repair and rebuild our water infrastructure systems. And if Congress ensures taxpayer dollars are spent on high-quality, American-made materials like iron and steel, we will create jobs and invest even more in our economy.

Good news: The Senate has passed this important bill. Now it's up to the House to take action. Please tell your Member of Congress to vote for the Water Resources Development Act of 2016.

  • Enough is Enough. Tell President Obama to Stand Up for American Workers — and Stand Up to China

More than 19,000 Americans have faced layoffs across the country because of the steel imports crisis. Dozens of factories have shut down, impacting entire communities.

The problem: China is making far more steel than it needs. In fact, it's making more than the entire world needs. China has to do something with all that excess steel, so it dumps it into the U.S. market — far below fair market value.

The Chinese steel industry is heavily subsidized by the government and doesn’t follow labor or environmental laws. China repeatedly pledged to cut down on production, but nothing has changed.

China doesn’t play by the rules — but it certainly takes advantage of America’s open marketplace!

Tell President Obama to tell China enough is enough — it's time to enforce our trade laws.

  • Democrats and Republicans are Preparing Their Party Platforms — Make Sure They Include These Action Items

Americans on both sides of the aisle are tired of factories closing and jobs heading overseas. They want to see smart policy enacted to take on trade cheats like China, rebuild our domestic manufacturing base and create more middle class jobs.

Both the Democrats and the Republicans are preparing their official party platforms for the 2016 election. Let’s make sure manufacturing issues are included in both platforms.

There's a lot that both parties can do to boost manufacturing, including:

    • Stopping unfair trade: Our leaders should hold countries like China accountable when they break the rules, including by dumping their goods into our market and manipulating their currencies.
    • Strengthening our defense: America relies on nations like Russia and China for many key materials used by the military. We need to take immediate steps to ensure our troops are ready to respond with high-quality, American-made products.
    • Investing in infrastructure: Our nation’s roads, bridges, railways, ports, airports and water systems are in terrible shape. Investing to fix them would create millions of jobs and provide a big economic boost — and using Made in America materials whenever possible would be a win-win.
  • Tell the Pennsylvania General Assembly to Stand Up for Steel

When countries like China cheat, Pennsylvania loses.

More than 135,000 Pennsylvanians have a job because of the steel industry. But those jobs are at risk because of China's trade cheating. China is producing more steel than it needs, and it's getting rid of all its excess steel by dumping it into the U.S. market at rock-bottom prices.

This is hugely unfair. China subsidizes its steel production, and companies there don't abide by labor and environmental standards like we have in the United States.

Pennsylvanian manufacturers and workers can compete with anyone in the world — but they need the game to be fair.

Right now, the Pennsylvania General Assembly is considering a resolution asking President Obama and Congress to take action to address China's trade cheating. Tell your state senator and legislator to support this important measure.

  • URGENT ACTION: Stand Up for Steel Jobs in Illinois

When countries like China cheat, Illinois loses. That’s what is happening in Granite City, where 1,500 people already are laid off.

China is producing way more steel than it needs. So it’s dumping it into the U.S. market at rock-bottom prices. This is hugely unfair. China subsidizes its steel production, and companies there don’t abide by labor and environmental laws like we have in the United States.

Illinois manufacturers and workers are ready to compete with anybody in the world — but they need the game to be fair.

Right now, the Illinois General Assembly is considering a resolution demanding President Obama and Congress take action to address this trade cheating. Tell your state senator and legislator to support it before the session ends on May 31.

  • URGENT ACTION: Stand Up for Steel Jobs in Colorado

When countries like China cheat, Colorado loses. But that is what is happening in Pueblo, where hundreds of workers are laid-off at EVRAZ Rocky Mountain Steel.

But there's a bill making its way through the Colorado Senate that will help. It encourages the purchase of U.S. goods and services from U.S.-based companies.

Taxpayer dollars should support companies that invest in U.S. operations and workers. It makes ZERO sense to send tax money overseas when Americans are ready to do the work at a competitive price. Colorado’s tax dollars should NEVER support trade cheating that hurts American workers.

Please tell your state senator to support and cosponsor this commonsense measure.

  • We Need Action! Save Our Steel Jobs — Before It's Too Late

Roughly 13,500 Americans have been laid-off and major steel mills across the country have closed because of an unprecedented surge in subsidized steel imports from countries like China. It's time for the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) and Commerce Department to do something about this crisis.

China's steel is heavily subsidized by its government, which also doesn't require its companies to abide by strict labor or environmental laws. But China is producing way more steel than it can use. It needs to get rid of all that extra steel, so it dumps it in the U.S. market at a rock-bottom price. That's not fair to American steelmakers, who compete in an open market and play by the rules.

U.S. steelworkers and companies are paying the price for China's trade cheating — and they can't take much more. Tell the USTR and Commerce Department to Save Our Steel Jobs and implement a plan of action to address this crisis.

  • Stand Up for Steel Jobs in Minnesota

When countries like China cheat, Minnesota loses. That’s what is happening on the Iron Range, where hundreds of people already are laid-off.

China is producing way more steel than it needs. So it’s dumping it into the U.S. market at rock-bottom prices. This is hugely unfair. China subsidizes its steel production, and companies there don’t abide by labor and environmental laws like we have in the United States.

Minnesota manufacturers and workers are ready to compete with anybody in the world — but they need the game to be fair.

Right now, the Minnesota legislature is considering a resolution demanding President Obama and Congress take action to address this trade cheating. Tell your state senator and legislator to support it.

  • TAKE ACTION: Companies That Offshore Shouldn't Keep Taxpayer Dollars

It was bad enough when Indiana companies Carrier Corporation and United Technologies Electronic Controls announced that they are closing their Hoosier State factories and moving 2,100 jobs to Mexico. But the companies also received more than half a million dollars in state incentives!

This isn't right. Companies that offshore jobs shouldn't be rewarded with taxpayer money designed to support those who do the right thing by manufacturing their products in the United States.

Carrier and United Technologies Electronic Controls, both part of the United Technologies Corp., should reconsider sending these jobs overseas. But if they don't, at the very least they should return any taxpayer funding they took as an incentive to manufacture in Indiana.

  • Ask the Candidates: How Will You Create Manufacturing Jobs?

During the 2012 campaign, President Obama made a promise to create 1 million new manufacturing jobs in his second term. Only about 370,000 new manufacturing jobs have been created since then. There's almost no chance Obama will reach his goal, as only 30,000 new manufacturing jobs were created in 2015.

It will be up to the next president to lead the charge to create manufacturing jobs. How do the candidates plan to succeed where President Obama couldn’t?

Please ask the current crop of presidential candidates to share their strategy for manufacturing job growth and growing the middle class.

  • Stand Up for American Workers — and Stand Up to China

Chinese officials are actively lobbying to convince our government to reverse China's longstanding “non-market economy” status. If China succeeds, our laws used to level the playing field against unfair trade will be gutted — and American workers will suffer.

China’s communist regime in Beijing controls every facet of its economy, from its banks to its factories. Even as China’s economy slows, its state-owned steel companies continue to ramp up production, making far more steel than China — or indeed, the world — can consume. Rather than cutting back production, China is exporting its excess steel to the U.S. market at rock bottom prices. Those unfairly dumped and subsidized imports lead to factory closures and mass layoffs in the United States.

American workers are ready and willing to compete against anyone in the world. But China rigs the game.

The United States needs strong trade remedy laws to ensure a level playing field and to protect against unfair trade. Tell President Obama and Members of Congress to stand up to Chinese officials and maintain China's non-market economy status.

  • Your National Rail System, Made in China

Investing in transportation infrastructure could support as many as 6,700 South Dakota jobs every year. But not if these dollars are sent overseas. Tell Senator Thune to oppose any increase in Amtrak's Buy America threshold.

  • Your National Rail System, Made in China

Investing in transportation infrastructure could support as many as 1.1 million American jobs every year. But not if these dollars are sent overseas. Tell your Representative to oppose any increase in Amtrak's Buy America threshold.

  • STOP the Steel Import Crisis

A flood of dumped and subsidized steel imports is wreaking havoc on American workers. Tell Congress and the President to STOP the steel import crisis and enforce of our trade laws.

  • Your National Rail System, Made in China

Investing in transportation infrastructure could support as many as 60,000 Florida jobs every year. But not if these dollars are sent overseas. Tell Senator Nelson to oppose any increase in Amtrak's Buy America threshold.

  • I Pledge to Support U.S. Jobs by Keeping it Made in America

  • URGENT: A Shot at Saving American Manufacturing Jobs

American workers hurt by unfair trade shouldn’t need to be on life support before they can seek help. But that’s exactly what’s happening today to U.S. manufacturers and workers, who must close factories and face mass layoffs before they can find any relief under our current trade laws.

The bipartisan American Trade Enforcement Effectiveness Act will help Americans fight back against these unfair trade practices. Tell your Member of Congress to sponsor this vital piece of legislation.

  • URGENT: Tell Gov. Andrew Cuomo to Save New York Jobs

The New York state budget deadline is April 1. Please tell Gov. Andrew Cuomo to include Buy America preferences in the budget, which will ensure New York’s tax dollars support American-made products and American jobs whenever possible.

  • Congress: Stop Currency Cheating to Save Middle Class Jobs

Nearly 900,000 U.S. jobs were lost in 2013 due to America’s growing trade deficit with Japan. Even more jobs could disappear if the proposed Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) with Japan and 10 other nations is approved without a provision to prevent currency manipulation. Tell Congress to take action to guarantee a level playing field for American workers and businesses by ensuring currency manipulation is stopped in the TPP.

  • I Pledge to Buy American-Made!

  • I Pledge to Keep it Made in America this Holiday Season

Need gift ideas? Check out our AAM's 2014 Made in America Holiday Gift Guide.

  • Tell Gov. Christie to Sign Legislation to Support American Workers

Where do your tax dollars go? Without Buy America preferences, your state tax dollars could be heading overseas rather than supporting good-paying jobs in your heighborhood. Tell Gov. Chris Christie to stop outsourcing American jobs by signing the Made in America legislative package.

  • Strengthen Our Trade Laws to Keep Good-Paying Jobs in America

Tell Congress and the President to support American jobs. American manufacturing can benefit from trade, but only if foreign countries are deterred from trade cheating and currency manipulation.

  • It's Time to Rebuild America

Our nation's roads, bridges, ports, and railroads need your help.  We are long over due for real investment in American infrastructure to support millions of American jobs, make American businesses more efficient, and keep the United States the world's most dynamic economy. Tell your elected officials to work together to rebuild America.

60 Minutes takes on America's infrastructure:

John Oliver talks on infrastructure on Last Week Tonight:

  • Save Our Steel Jobs!
    Save Our Steel Jobs
Jobs across the country are on the line as America's steel producers face an enormous threat from illegal foreign competition.

Tell your elected officials you're counting on them to stick up for American workers when the Department of Commerce makes its critical ruling in the Oil Country Tubular Goods (OCTG) trade case.

ACT NOW to save our steel jobs!

  • We Need an American-Made Military

Manufacturing is the foundation for our national security. To keep our nation safe and secure, we must make sure that our servicemen and women can rely on their equipment and depend on it being there to protect them. Tell Congress and the President to make access to high-quality American-made arms and equipment their top priority.

  • We Need a National Manufacturing Strategy

Manufacturing is the heart of the American economy. But we have no real plan for revitalizing our manufacturing sector. Preparing one should be our highest priority. Please urge Congress and the President to create a national manufacturing strategy to help rebuild America’s middle class.

  • Stop Currency Cheating, Save American Jobs

China's currency manipulation has cost America millions of middle-class manufacturing jobs. Tell Congress to support legislation to stop currency cheats from undermining American manufacturing.

  • Don't Let Currency Cheaters Steal American Jobs

Washington is on the verge of another trade agreement, but it's not worth sacrificing American jobs to secure an agreement at any cost. As the President and Congress move forward with the Trans-Pacific Partnership, let’s make sure that countries like Japan can't manipulate their currencies to undercut American manufacturers.

Tell Congress and the President to address currency manipulation in the TPP trade agreement.

  • Tell Congress to Buy American and Invest in American Jobs

Do you want Washington spending your hard-earned tax dollars on steel and other goods from China? Demand that your elected officials stop outsourcing American jobs. Ask them to support Buy America preferences for highways, bridges, and other public works.
